Loss of Privacy Due to Facebook and Effect it has on Society

How many stories do we hear every day of job’s firing employees because of stuff they found on Facebook? Or how many recent cases have we heard of people committing suicide because someone decided to embarrass them on Facebook? One of the biggest social networking sites created has brought ups and downs. Facebook seems to be a great place where friends can keep in touch, or post pictures for family and friends to comment on, but it is safe? Is everything we put on face book for everyone to see? No matter how much security Facebook tries to provide, there are always instances of loss of privacy on Facebook.  I plan to discuss how much of our privacy is invaded because of Facebook and how this has affected our society. I plan to give examples of how today’s society has become less private than before and why this may not be a good thing.

  1. Privacy has been an issue for not just facebook but many other companies as well. It is difficult for us to say how safe your information is on facebook. One of my CIS professor told me that facebook works very closely with marketing research firms to give away information on what a particular user likes or is associated with. For example, if you "like" something on facebook, then facebook may give away that information that a user using this IP address like BMW car company and the next thing you know that there are ADs of BMW on the side of facebook. I dont think they give away your identification but just giving away that a particular user with this IP address has just liked "BMW" and BMW may post ADs on your page, set cookies, etc...and BMW ADs will follow you even when you're browsing another website. There are many issues related to privacy such as that one. It's interesting about things operate behind the facebook.

    Good luck on your project!

  2. Facebook has definitely created a different norm in social media, which can be considered good or bad. Facebook is now almost mandatory for companies to have a Facebook page because it creates an awareness as well as updates for the public. Security and privacy takes a big toll on Facebook and I believe this issue on how safe Facebook is, leads certainly to a great topic. I am interested in reading your paper and wish you the best of luck during your research! Good luck!

  3. Theres a lot of buzz going around regarding internet privacy issues. The fact is facebook and other free to use internet services make their money by selling your information to advertisers and thus don't have to charge you.As a Marketing major myself, i understand how important it is for companies to have this information about you so they can create and tailor specific marketing plans. An interesting question is would people be willing to pay a monthly subscription fee if it meant that facebook would not use or collect their information? Either way i look forward to seeing your research!
